Lafayette sophomore Amanda Magadan left today for the Netherlands and will once again don the red, white and blue of the United States to begin a seven day, four game adventure. By iPhone I received this message as she began her trip. " I am so honored to get the opportunity to travel to the Netherlands and play internationally. I am looking forward to this experience, and how it will help me further develop as a field hockey player. To be able to wear the red, white, and blue during our Canada series was a truly rewarding and surreal experience in itself, and I am so fortunate to be able to travel with my fellow teammates to Holland where this sport is part of their cultural upbringing. I know our team will work hard and grow as a unit, which is something I'm so excited to see. I can't wait to leave! Go USA!!"
The team is coached by the assistant coach for the US team Janneke Schopman. Several weeks ago they took on the Canadian team and won all four games showing a strong offense. Aside from meeting the Netherlands under 21 team on Tuesday they will also play several top Dutch teams completing a four game slate on March the 12 and return to the US on March 14.
Jennifer Stone, the Lafayette head coach said of Madagan's selection to the 18 member team, "We are so proud of Amanda, and the opportunity she has." Stone continued, " We are so pleased with the cooperation of all involved. the Lafayette administration, and faculty have been extraordinarily supportive, making sure she is able to keep up with her classes while away."
In the meantime Lafayette will open their spring season with an appearance at the Big Apple indoor tournament. They will be playing Drexel, Rutgers, Maryland, and Albany in the university and college division this weekend at the home of the WC Eagles field hockey club. " We will miss Amanda but she will become an even better field hockey player after this experience." In fact, the whole Lafayette team will be traveling to Spain in June, and will themselves have a chance to test their skills against top international clubs while sampling Spanish tourist sites and culture before returning to the United States.
